Gum Disease Treatment
|
Gingivitis
Gingivitis is an early stage of gum disease. This is when the
build-up of bacteria around the gums causes a reddening & swelling of the
gums (inflammation). Gingivitis is easily
reversible by proper brushing & flossing.
Periodontitis
Periodontitis is an advanced gum disease that occurs if
gingivitis is not treated. In periodontitis, the bacteria move down the side of
the teeth under the gumline, & destroy the bone and supportive tissues.
There may also be hardening of the bacteria into calculus (tartar), which
cannot be removed by brushing. Destruction of the bone is not reversible, but
can be stopped.
Treatment of periodontitis will not replace the bone loss,
but you can stop it from getting worse. Causes and risk factors of periodontal disease:
- Genetics
- Smoking
- Diabetes
- Medications
- Stress
- Pregnancy
- Poor nutrition
- Clenching and grinding
- Other systemic disease
